Spit roast on the frozen River Avon

The picture shows a spit roast taking place on the frozen River Avon in Evesham. The man looking after the spit on the right is Thomas Taylor, an Evesham butcher who died in 1902, aged 54. This may date the event to sometime around 1890. Thomas was born in Wickhamford and baptised in Badsey in 1848. Here is an article about the Taylor family.
