Josephine Brown Butler, née Lawrence (1872-1939), was the wife of Franics Mourilyan Butler who was the nephew of Eugénie Sladden.  She is mentioned in three letters written in 1915 and 1916.

Josephine was born at Milford, USA, on 27th April 1872, the daughter of Captain Joseph Lawrence.  Josephine married Francis (Frank) Mourilyan Butler on 18th October 1902 at the Church of the Transfiguration, New York City, USA.  They had two daughters and one son:  Vera Lawrence (1903), Patience Mourilyan (1908) and Francis Charles Joseph (1915-1940).  In 1911, they lived at Westfield, Faringdon, Berkshire, with a nurse and four servants.  Frank later bought Carswell Manor in Faringdon, Oxfordshire, a Jacobean country house, now St Hugh’s School, an exclusive preparatory school.

Josephine still lived at Carswell Manor at the time of her death, but died at 31 Queens Gate, South Kensington, on 15th October 1930.  She left effects of £117,339 11s 1d. Josephine was buried at Milford Center Cemetery, Connecticut, USA in the Lawrence family plot.  The inscription says:

Josephine B Lawrence, wife of Frances [sic] M Butler, born in Milford April 27 1872, died in England October 15 1930
