Biographical Details

Winifred Emma Capon, née Butler (1880-1958), known as Winnie, was the niece of Eugénie Sladden, being the daughter of her sister, Fanny Butler.

Winnie was born at Gloucester House, Claremont Road, Surbiton, Kingston upon Thames, on 20th January 1880, the fifth of nine children of Charles and Fanny Butler.  She was baptized at Surbiton on 1st March 1880.

On 20th January 1909, Winnie married Edward (Ted) Orford Capon, a solicitor, at St James, Weybridge.  Winnie’s younger sister, Mabel Jacqueline, had married Ted’s younger brother, Charles Eldred, the year before.

In 1911 they were living at The Hawthorns, Twyford, Berkshire.  They had two sons:  Eric E (1911) and Charles Kenneth (1915-1988).  Winnie is mentioned in two letters written by her mother, in connection with the birth of her second son.

Ted and Winnie moved to Charfield Cottage, Charvil Lane, Sonning, some time after the war, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Ted died in January 1939, leaving Winnie a widow for nearly 20 years.  Eight months later, on the outbreak of the Second World War, Winnie had her niece, Monica, staying with her at Charfield.

Winnie died on 28th November 1958 at The Fair Mile Hospital, Wallingford, Berkshire.  Her final home had been Charfield Cottage, Sonning.  She left effects of £10,293 2s 3d.
