Valuation Survey - Aldington

The Field Books for Aldington may be found at The National Archives under reference IR58/93290 and IR58/93291, with just a few at IR58/93300 and IR58/93301: a total of 193 assessments of land and property.

According to the Poor Rate calculations, the estimated extent of Aldington was 625 acres 3 roods. The gross annual value was £3,733 10s; the rateable value was £3,116 18s.

The inspector first visited Aldington on 4^th December 1911 to survey some of the property owned by Thomas Byrd Junior; this was the day when it was sold at auction. However, the main surveys of the various landowners took place in the summer of 1912.

The largest landowner in Aldington was James Ashwin of Bretforton Manor, whose property included, as well as Aldington Manor, a number of cottages in the village and a substantial amount of land. Other major landowners were: the Reverend Thomas Clarke and Mrs F M Field who both owned land at The Parks, the trustees of John Pickup Lord who owned land at Badsey Undergrounds and Thomas Byrd (Junior and Senior) who owned a number of cottages in the village and land up as far as Aldington Sidings (by 1911, Thomas Byrd Senior had transferred most of his property into the ownership of his son).
