MALTBY, Gerald Charles (1895-1971) – East Kent Regiment

Private Gerald Charles Maltby (1895-1971) lived in Wickhamford briefly in 1925.  He was born in Maidstone in 1895 and all of the records concerning this man are linked to Kent.   He was living in Beckenham in 1911, with his father, a chartered surveyor.

G.C.Maltby enlisted as private in the Buffs, the East Kent Regiment (Nos 1777 and 240494).   According to his medals record sheet he landed in Mesopotamia on 9th December 1915.  This would place him in the 1/5th (Weald of Kent) Battalion.  He was discharged from the Army on 5th May 1919.

His only connection to Wickhamford came in 1925.  He was living in the village at that time as the Banns for his marriage, to Emily Kingsnorth, were read in the church.  They married in her parish in Maidstone. The reason for his presence in Wickhamford in 1925 remains unknown and he was not listed on the 1924 Electoral Roll.
