Private Edgar Moss Poole (1884-1968) enlisted on 16th September 1914 and gave his address as Wickhamford Manor. After a period in the Worcestershire Yeomanry (No 2681) he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) (No 52907) on 19th February 1917, where he served in 17th Squadron. His record also mentions some time between these units as serving in the 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment.
He was sent to France on 1st June 1918 and discharged on 21st March 1919, when he gave his address as in Ferndale, Glamorganshire. As he was awarded the 1914/15 Star as well as the Victory and British War medals he must have seen overseas service in 1915. Information from his family records that he was wounded whilst in Egypt in around 1918.
Edgar was born in Shipston-on-Stour and in 1911 was a groom in Moreton-in-Marsh, and had the same role at the Manor in 1914. In 1919, his son, Archie Moss Poole (b. 1914), entered Badsey School and his address was given as Wickhamford Lodge. This is at the Evesham end of Wickhamford Lane. The boy left the school in mid-1920, as his family had moved from the village. After the War, Edgar Moss Poole lived in Broadway and is buried in St Eadburgha's cemetery.
