Poor Rate Book for the Parish of Badsey: handwritten entries in a printed book published by Hadden, Best & Co, West Harding Street, Fetter Lane, London, printers and publishers of the books and forms of account prescribed by the Local Government Board for the use of Poor Law Unions, saniatary authorities, school, highway, local and burial boards, etc. The purpose of the book was: “In this book shall be inserted the particulars of the assessment and collection of the Poor Rate of the Parish, as set forth in the form of Rate Book”. The assessment was dated 15th December 1890, after the rate of sixpence in the pound, estimated to meet all the expenses for the relief of the poor incurred before 25th March 1891. The book contains 38 pages of completed pre-printed pro-formas (double page spread) with information under the following headings: Name of occupier; Name of owner; Description of property rated; Name or situation of property; Estimated extent (acres, roods, perches); Gross estimated rental; Rateable value; Rate at 6d in the pound; and matters relating the collection. The last page contains the words: “We the undersigned do hereby declare that one of us, or some person on our behalf has examined and compared the several particulars in the respective columns of the foregoing rate with the Valuation List made under the Authority of the Union Assessment Committee Act 1862 now in force in this Parish, and that the several hereditaments are to the best of our belief rated according to the value appearing in such list. And we do further declare that the total of the foregoing rate amounts to the sum of £71 7s 6d. Signed: Julius Sladden, Churchwarden; Edward Wilson, John Poole, Overseers.”
