Silhouette of Clara Brown Constable in about 1890. Clara was the mother of Mela Brown Constable (fiancée of Cyril Sladden).
Someone has written on the back: “This technique had been a favourite since the time before photography became generally used. Inscribed on the back, in the hand of Barbara Brown Constable, is the one word, ‘Mother’. The likeness is of Clara Brown Constable (née Wall) as a young married woman. She still had a very sweet face when she died in 1934. Mela, her eldest daughter, was like her.”
We are grateful to Rosemary Richards (granddaughter of Mela) for providing us with a copy of this photo.
