Attestation papers for John Cecil Brown Constable (known as Cecil), brother of Mela Brown Constable, reveal that he was aged almost 25 when he joined up on 2nd September 1914 with the London Regiment (London Scottish), a territorial force. He stated that he was a civil engineer and had been a member of the South African Railway Corps. He was 5’ 10¼” tall, weighed 11st 5½lbs and his chest measurement was 38¼”. He gave his uncle, Henry Alexander Brown Constable of Tunbridge Wells, as his next of kin, as his parents were separated and his mother was living overseas in France.
Just two weeks after enlisting, Cecil went to France as part of the Expeditionary Force.
