Goodbye to the phone box at the top of Synehurst. On the afternoon of Monday 11th April 2022, a lorry arrived to remove the phone box, which had now become largely redundant.
Throughout the 20th century, telephone boxes were a staple of town and village life. Their purpose was to help millions of people connect around the country. At their peak there were 92,000 payphones across the UK. But with the advancement of technology, like the internet and mobile phones, phone boxes were needed much less than before, as people had the technology right there in their pockets.
We are grateful to Alan Wadsworth who witnessed the scene and sent us this photograph ten minutes later, 11th April 2022.
