On 2nd June 1953 the Queen had her Coronation after acceding to the throne at 25 years of age.  It was an occasion for pageantry and celebration, but also a solemn religious ceremony where the young Queen swore the Coronation Oath to her country.  Coronations are held at Westminster Abbey and have stayed the same for the last 900 years.  The Queen was blessed and anointed in St Edward’s Chair – 2.05 m tall, made in 1300 and used since 1626 by every British Monarch – and then received the Sovereign’s Orb and Sceptre, before being crowned with St Edward’s Crown.  The Queen then left the coronation wearing the Imperial State Crown on her triumphant ride in the Gold State Coach back to Buckingham Palace.
