The announcement of the births of Julius and Eugénie’s children were placed in The Times. As well as having the announcement published in the printed copy of The Times, the parents also received a small souvenir card with a listing of all the births appearing in that day’s edition. Cards survive for the first five children:
“On the 19th inst, at Chipping Norton, the wife of JULIUS SLADDEN – a son” (this was John Dilnot Sladden, born 19th November 1878)
“On the 22nd Nov, at Badsey, near Evesham, the wife of JULIUS SLADDEN, of a daughter” (this was May Eugénie Sladden, born 22nd November 1879)
“On the 25th inst, at Seward House, Badsey, near Evesham, the wife of JULIUS SLADDEN, of a daughter” (this was Mary Kathleen Sladden, born 25th March 1881)
“On the 21st inst, at Badsey, near Evesham, the wife of JULIUS SLADDEN, of a daughter” (this was Ethel Narcisse Sladden, born 21st November 1882)
“On the 21st inst, at Badsey, near Evesham, the wife of JULIUS SLADDEN, of a son” (this was Arthur Francis Savory Sladden, born 21st February 1884)
This formal phraseology used was conventional for the time, ie neither the name of the child or of the mother was mentioned.
