Picture postcard of the General Hospital, Birmingham, where Mela Brown Constable worked from October 1914 to April 1915. She sent the postcard to her fiancée, Cyril Sladden, on 18th November 1914.
Interestingly, the postcard had been published by a German company and printed in Germany, as the printed words on the back say: “Published by E A Schwerdtfeger & Co, London EC, printed at their works in Berlin.” E A Schwerdtfeger & Co, in operation since 1894, was one of the largest producers of real photo postcards on bromide paper; they had opened an office at 28 Monkswell Street in London, and also in New York.
