Abbey Manor Souvenir Booklet

Souvenir booklet of Abbey Manor Red Cross Hospital, Evesham, 1914-1919, price one shilling. The front cover is signed by Mary Anderson de Navarro, who is referred to in the text as Madame de Navarro. Mary Anderson de Navarro (1859-1940) was an American stage actress who was married to Antonio Fernando de Navarro, an American sportsman and barrister of Basque extraction, whom she had met on a visit to England. They married in 1890 and settled at Court Farm, Broadway. She resisted encouragements to return to the theatre, but did a number of fund-raising performances during World War I in Evesham, Worcester, Stratford and London. She died at her home in Broadway in 1940, aged 80.
