Eugénie Narcisse Mourilyan was born in Paris on 3rd December 1854, the youngest of eight children of John Mourilyan, a solicitor, and his wife, Mary Anna.
Eugénie was confirmed at Marbeuf Church, Paris, by the Bishop of Colombo on 4th May 1870. She took her first communion four days later. The certificate was signed by George Gregory Gardiner who was the father of her future sister-in-law, Caroline Florence Gardiner (who married Eugénie’s brother, Frederick, in 1872).
