Wedding of 24-year-old Ernest George Knight (1908-1994) and 28-year-old Alice Elizabeth Brookes (1904-1985), on 17th April 1933, the Monday in Easter week. The photo was taken at the rear of 14 Cotswold View (now 60 Willersey Road), which was the home of Alice’s mother, Mrs Eliza Bennett.
Left to right: Reg Knight (brother of Ernest), Mildred Knight (sister of Ernest), Alice Brookes (bride), Ernest Knight (groom), Fred Knight (brother of Ernest), unknown (possibly Mary Jinks who was a witness), Bill Sears (cousin of Alice).
Ernest, a market gardener, was born at Littleton, the eldest of five children of Edwin Knight and his wife, Lilian (née Jones); his father had died in 1929. He came from a long line of the Knight family who had lived in Badsey since the 18th century. Alice was born at Badsey, the elder of two daughters of William John K Brookes and his wife, Eliza (née Sears). Her father died when she was eight years old and her mother married again in 1917 to Thomas Henry Bennett and had a son. Eliza was again widowed by the time of the marriage.
Ernest and Alice had one son and remained in Badsey for the rest of their lives.
We are grateful to Ernest and Alice’s son, Dennis Knight, for supplying us with a copy of this photo.
