These council houses were built just after the Great War. Here is Harry Field (born 1920) and his brother Bill (William born 1915) in front of their house, which was then No 8 Council Houses, Pitchers Hill. By the look of the boys, this was taken around 1934. Harry Field moved into it when he was aged 5 in about 1925. It shows that the family were growing vegetables in their front garden in the mid-1930s, probably a good use of space at this time.
