St James' Close about 1962

This postcard dates back to the early 1960s, probably taken soon after 1962, when the houses in St James' Close were built.

The first house on the left is No 24 St James' Close, with No 23 next-door. The Close then bends round to the left in a cul-de-sac, where Nos 5-22 are situated. No 4 St James' Close can be seen on the other side of the entrance to the Close, with Nos 1-3 at an angle to the right. Beyond these houses, South View Terrace, The Old Bakehouse, and the start of the houses on Brewers Lane can just be made out. In the early 1960s, there were no houses on the opposite side of the road, where Nos 4, 6, 8 and 10 Brewers Lane are now situated.

The wall, that can be seen on the left-hand side of the card, no longer exists. It was located on the bend between the horse chestnut tree and the road, and was a popular place for the local children to sit and congregate.
