TRAGIC END TO OUTING – Badsey Man Dies after Car-Lorry Collision

An outing to Gloucester ended in tragedy for a party of Badsey, Bretforton and Chipping Campden men at 6.15 pm Wednesday. 

Returning home in a car being driven by a Bretforton licensee, 46-year-old Albert Knight of 8 Svnehurst. Badsey. died in Evesham Hospital after the car had been involved in a collision with a lorry. This is the fourth fatality in the Vale of Evesham this month.  

The accident occurred near Beckford at the junction of the car track to Gloucester Sand Pits about a quarter of a mile on the Evesham side of Teddington Hands. 

The car, which was carrying four passengers, was being driven towards Evesham by Mr Neville Crane, licensee of the New Inn, Bretforton. 

The passengers in the car were his brother, 40-year-old George Crane of  29 Horsebridge Avenue, Badsey, Norman Porter (29) of 11 Grangefield Road, Bretforton, and Alfred Ballard (42) of 4 Weston Road, Chipping Campden, and Mr Knight.

Near Beckford, the car was involved in a collision with a lorry being driven by William John Lawrence of 27 Greenfields, Upton-on-Severn. The car was extensively damaged and all six men were taken to Evesham Hospital. Mr Knight died shortly after being admitted and Mr George Crane was detained with head injuries. He was later stated to be "slightly unproved." 

Mr Knight, a market gardener, was unmarried and lived with his mother.
