My Dearest Wife,
I was very pleased to have good news of you yesterday afternoon and to receive your good wishes for the New Year.
I shall post this by day mail so that you may receive it on Sunday. Little Jack’s cold was quite troublesome yesterday and after he went to bed he was very sick & his nose bled so I had a fire lit as the room struck cold, this evening he seems much better, but of course has not quite lost his cold, May and Ethel showed signs of colds to-day so Phyllis has also doctored them up, however they were very cheerful under it, Master Baby is a jolly little urchin and seems to grow every day. This morning I again rose at six and walked up to mash, breakfasted at the Mayors, of course Mrs H. took the opportunity of backing me for a ball ticket, it is on the 8th, if I do go I shall get away as early as I can as these things are not much fun to me. I am so sorry to hear about Lily, I was afraid when I left that she was in for an illness, I hope soon to have better news of her. Miss Savory bought Phyllis a box of paints each for Jack & May and some chocolates to put in their stockings the packages being addressed “with love from Father Xmas” I have not yet seen Miss S. and she has not I think been here much this week. I hear Miss Lopez called to-day to ask the chicks to dinner but Phyllis was prudent enough to decline on account of their colds. Kiss little Kit for me when you see her, how did she enjoy Mary’s tree? The children also send her kisses as well as for dear Mamma, they will I think be delighted to get you both home again and I am sure I shall, however you must on no account travel before you are equal to the journey. With much love, believe me ever your affectionate Husband
