My Dearest Wife,
I was so busy all day that I had no time to write you a few lines as I had intended, so now having had my dinner I will send you the news before going to dress for the ball – I had a good deal rather have been going to bed! The children are pretty well again. The two elder ones were asleep when I came in but the little ones were awake and very smiling. I was very glad to find from your letter of 6th inst that you confirmed feeling stronger, as I think the house wants its mistress back and I think you will have a very general welcome. Today is Mother’s birthday so I have treated myself to a bottle of best sherry wherewith duly to honour the day and also to drink the health of the young prince who comes of age to-day. I will enclose a letter received from Ash yesterday, please read and return, as it is unanswered.
I will pay Phillis her wages. I sent the 14/- due for your laying in charity.
The hams have been hung up in the kitchen but I will send them to [?] on the first opportunity. Did you when you wrote to Mother accept her offer of a knitted petticoat? I think the chicks have passed their colds on to me, but I have no more early mornings this week so shall be able to nurse it a bit, it was rather rough this morning when I walked up but I had breakfast at the Rose & Crown after mashing. With much love I remain
Your affectionate Husband
