My Dear Kathleen,
You girls will be very pleased to hear that Jack is to go into the Civil Service after all, last Saturday came a letter from the Commissioners saying that in view of probable vacancies in the Second Division during the next two or three months he could, if he desired, have his name added to the list of successful candidates at the examination of last June, of course he has accepted the offer and I went up to London on Monday to consult the Kings College authorities for which department he had better express his preference, now he has only to pass the medical exam and then await an appointment, most probably in London, he may not leave the Bank for a few week and will not definitely throw up that position until he has safely passed the doctor, you can imagine Auntie Lottie and Uncle John are very pleased at this turn in events, as indeed are we all, it seems nice that he should eventually be rewarded for his steady work.
I see the Stratford plays begin April 17th “Macbeth” and Henry VI (part 2) are the evening performances for which late trains run our way and “Merchant of Venice” or Henry VI (part 2) can be seen in the afternoon, if you or Ethel wish to invest in tickets please say what you would like and I will give notice for tickets before the ballot, the historical play is to be the special revival for this year, they are also going to perform the entire play of Hamlet (in two parts) afternoon and evening of Monday Apr 24 that would be very nice but you would have to “bike” home at night, it would do if fine as it is full moon and I see for this double performance they issue a limited number of Pit and Gallery tickets for early admission through Front Entrance. I will send a newspaper cutting or two, read the article from the Daily Telegraph about Imperialism also the English Church Union meeting and the leading article thereon. Georgie got up two places in form during the last fortnight. I am glad Ethel keeps a good place.
