My dearest wife

I received your postcard yesterday afternoon and can quite realise your disappointment at the dislocation of all the plans which would have made for such a happy holiday at Newport. I hoped from what Jack told me in a letter of 5th inst that he would be able to join you today after all and I still trust that may be the case. Should he be able to come it will cheer you all up and then perhaps the girls would feel more induced to stay on. Of course in any case, you and Ethel will open house on 17th when Mela would come and I should return. Cyril might desire to go into training somewhere but that is as yet uncertain. I think he told you that Mr Tisdall was leaving in a few days for a better job that might necessitate my earlier return but I hope not. I have written Mr Collier on the subject. I hope to run up to town on Monday to see Arthur and might possibly stay the night, returning here next day. Keep a brave heart, little woman, we must not be too elated at early successes or depressed by untoward events. Love to Jack, should he be with you.

Your loving husband
Julius Sladden
