My dearest Husband,

I was glad to get your letter yesterday morning & will now answer it before going to evening service.

It has been finer today & we went for a nice walk this afternoon; there are such nice houses about here, but many of them seem to be to let.  Hubert Phillips has been spending the afternoon here, he seems in very good spirits about his future prospects.  Arthur took me over Barts on Friday afternoon, it is most interesting; we only went into two wards as it was getting late & after five o’clock the nurses are busy tidying up the patients; we had a talk with the Sister who seems a very nice woman.  In the new block we had a little adventure, Arthur took me out on the flat roof to see the view & the door blew shut & there was no means of opening it; however he managed to get through a window & open it, or it might have taken us some time to attract anyone’s attention.

Tell Juliet she would have been amused to see the huge banks of Cod Liver oil & other medicines in the stores of the Dispensary.  After doing the hospital, Kathleen met me & we had dinner with Jack at a “Cabin” in the Strand & then went to the Duke of York’s theatre to see Trelawny of the Wells, a very amusing play & well acted.  During the third act we heard a good deal of noise outside & the fire-engines going by, & when we came out we found that there was a fire quite near, next door I believe, & I think they had been playing the engines on the theatre as a precaution, for there was a lot of water about.

We had a surprise visit from Lizzie yesterday, she is at Streatham for the week end & I think of going over there tomorrow, as it does not suit Florence Pollard to have me till Tuesday.  All were well at Richmond I think Mary will come to us the latter end of May.  I have signed the cheque & will enclose it, I expect Ethel acknowledged it, if not I must do so.  Aunt Lizzie can’t come up to town till later in the week, so I am afraid I shan’t manage to see her.   Arthur’s bicycle came all right.

With much love to you all, hoping you are all well

I am
Your loving wife

Eugénie N Sladden
