My dear May
Your letter this morning was very welcome indeed and told me many things I wanted to hear. I am so glad my letters arrived before the funeral. The only thing I greatly regret is that Mary didn’t come. Apparently the date of the funeral not being given in her telegram she waited for a letter. I wish she had wired to you to enquire.
Perhaps I shall hear in your later letter where Mother’s grave is. What a nice selection of hymns were chose for the service – the right note of triumph rather than grief, but so hard to sing unfalteringly. I have found this a sad week, with no intimate friend that one could talk to, but just the same ordinary routine and surroundings. Fortunately I have my own tent. I was able to have a couple of hours quiet on Thursday, and read through the burial service.
I’m sure the sympathy shown by all around at home must be very helpful. I’m so glad all you girls were able to be at home and Jack too. I suppose he could only come down for 24 hours.
I had a long letter from Father speaking of her last days. He must have suffered very greatly, I hope he will keep well, and later be able to get a little change of scene. It is very satisfactory that you are living at home just now. I think you’ll understand so well how best to help him.
