My dear Father
Yesterday I went round to Arthur’s flat for the first time and was shown round. Kath and John also came round, and we all got tea together. It certainly looks like making a nice snug little home. Arthur has gone in for some pretty good furniture. He has ordered another table for the study, and will use the present one, folded up, in the hall. Kath’s grandfather clock was there, and looks very nice in the dining room; I had seen it in the little shop in the Brompton Road when I went in to look round and enquire prices for Kath, but had no clear memory which of the many it was. I also saw May’s tea service which I like very much. The dessert service is absurdly like it in pattern; I don’t like it quite so well because I don’t think the design suits a dessert service so well. Our glass is not yet ready. I shall write and hurry them up as it was done more than a week ago.
He had got two other nice presents, a hot water breakfast dish, with spirit lamp, from Mr & Mrs Simpson; and a tantalus from Fred and Christine Butler. He spoke of going to Addlestone this evening.
Mela returns to Blackheath tomorrow. I hope she will prove to have avoided the possibility of infection; it ought to be pretty safe in another week at any rate. She has not had such good weather this time, and it has been rather lonely with only Eve there, as Molly did not go with them after all. She thinks she will be able to get away for her holiday before Easter.
Trevor Eddershaw has been in London. He spent last weekend with his brother at Teddington, and then stayed a few days at a hotel last week.
I met him on Thursday morning, and we dined together and went to see Midsummer’s Night Dream which we both enjoyed greatly.
He seemed pretty well I thought considering it was only eight weeks since his operation. He spoke fairly well of himself, though he said he had felt better than he did that night. I hope he is on the way to make a good recovery.
Yesterday morning he came and looked over the college, before leaving later to return to Swansea. He will take up his work again in the autumn if well enough. Meanwhile he is arranging to spend a few months in some French university town, picking up the language, and attending if possible some lectures.
I have purchased the main part of my rig-out for the wedding. Kath finds that it makes me look 5 years older!
I am not quite sure yet when I shall be coming home; I think very probably on the Wednesday or Thursday before Easter.
