A FARMER AND HIS MILKMAN
Dishonesty Not Proven.
At Worcester Assize on Monday.
Joseph Taylor (24), (on bail), was indicted for stealing the sum of 1s. 3d. in money on December 13th and 1s. 4d. on December 15th, the property of his master, John Pope, a farmer, of Wickhamford.
Mr Buckmaster prosecuted, and Mr. R.H. Amphett defended.
Mrs Pope stated that the prisoner was formerly in the employ of her husband as a milkman. On December 13th she sent prisoner to the shop of Mr. Taylor, a grocer, at Bengeworth, for half a pound of tea, giving him 1s. 3d. to pay for it. Two days afterwards she sent him for some cheese, and also gave him 1s. 4d. to pay for it. She afterwards found that the prisoner had not paid for the food, but had booked them to a Mrs Marian, who resided at the prosecutor’s house.
[A long case report follows with many witnesses and Mr. Amphlett contended that a man’s liberty should not be taken away on the uncorroborated evidence and stupid evidence such that the prosecutor had given. The defendant was acquitted.]
