Private Percy Moseley Ashwin (1894-1975) was born in Welford, the son of farm bailiff, Alfred Ashwin and his wife Louisa. Badsey School admission records for Percy and his siblings reveal that the family lived at Whitfurrows, Wickhamford, from June 1905 to March 1906.
Percy was a gardener when he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards (No 23988) on 2nd June 1915, whilst living in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. Sent to France with the 7th Entrenching Battalion on 16th July 1916, he was transferred to the 3rd Battalion at the front on 21st September 1917. On arrival back in England on 3rd December 1917 he was placed in the 5th Reserve Battalion. He was demobilized on 22nd December 1919 and received the Victory and British War medals.
