SEABRIGHT, Hubert (1894-1956) – Worcestershire Regiment/Royal Garrison Artillery/Hampshire Regiment

PS-SEABRIGHT%20H%203.jpgPrivate Hubert Seabright (1894-1956) was the seventh of eight children of Thomas and Fanny (née Landy), born at Broadway.  He attended Badsey School Infants’ Department from 1898 to October 1900 whilst the family was living in Wickhamford; the family had moved to the village in October 1897.  He lived in Childswickham at the 1901 census where his father was an agricultural labourer.  The family later moved to Bishampton.

Hubert enlisted in the 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment (No. 17894) on 7th September 1914, but was considered “not likely to become an efficient soldier” because of an old injury to his right leg, and was discharged on 28th September after just 22 days’ service.  He later re-enlisted as, when he married Susan Ellen Ludlow on 19th May 1917, he was a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, based at Abbey Wood, Kent.   He was awarded the Victory and British War Medals (No. 69800).  In 1918 and 1919, he was listed in the Bishampton Absent Voters Lists with the same service number but as in D Battalion, the Hampshire Regiment.

Three of Hubert’s brothers served in the war:  William Seabright, Thomas Henry Seabright and Charles Alfred Seabright.  It is possible that Joseph Seabright may have served, too.  All five brothers survived the war.  The Bishampton War Memorial is unusual in that it lists the men who served, not just those who died.  However, only one Seabright is mentioned, H Seabright; this probably refers to Hubert rather than to his brother, Thomas Henry.

Hubert’s son, Kenneth Joseph Seabright, died in the Second World War in Egypt in 1941 and his death is commemorated on the Bishampton War Memorial.
