Private George William Camden (1895-1981) moved to Wickhamford after his period of service in the war. He was the son of Benjamin and Amy Camden and he was born in Wyre Piddle. He still lived in that village in 1911, when he was a 16-year-old gardener’s labourer.
George served in the Royal Fusiliers (No 96596) and Army Service Corps (No T4/065224). The only remaining papers concerning his War service refer to his medals – he was awarded the Victory and British War medals. He did see service in France, in the Somme area, and his identification tags survive. He is listed on the 1919 Absent Voters’ List for Wyre Piddle.
After marrying Nellie Gannaway in 1920, George lived initially at Orchard Farm, Longdon Hill and then in the Council Houses on Pitchers Hill. George worked at various times for March’s Taxis in Evesham, the Gas Board, Gordon Russell in Broadway and Reeds Timber.
His eldest son, Eric, died at Tobruk in the Second World War. George is buried in Wickhamford cemetery.
