First Hearing

6 Mar 1916
Case for exemption
Mr Richard Keen, Badsey, applied for his son, Albert Keen. Mr H Hall appeared in support of the application as Mr Keen is ill. Mr Keen had 8½ acres of land, and it would be impossible to do the land properly if the man had to go.
Outcome of appeal
Refused
Journal Date
11 Mar 1916

Second Hearing

Date of Hearing
4 Apr 1916 (Worcestershire Appeals Tribunal)
Case for exemption
Mr Richard Keen, Badsey, appealed for his son, Albert Keen. Mr Keen has 8½ acres of market garden land and his son, Albert, is the only man working on the land, and is responsible for its cultivation. Mr Keen is suffering from gout and is practically a cripple. If his son had to go it would mean complete ruin for him. It was no use having women labour unless he had a man to look after them; and he himself could not get to the ground to look after them.
Outcome of appeal
Exemption - conditional
Journal Date
8 Apr 1916

Third Hearing

Date of Hearing
18 Dec 1916 (Worcestershire Appeals Tribunal)
Case for exemption
The military appealed in the case of Albert Keen (19), single, son of Mr Richard Keen, of Badsey, on the ground that the offer of a substitute had been refused. Mr Roberts appeared for Mr Richard Keen, who has 8½ acres of ground; he is subject to gout and there is only his son to look after the land. Mr Keen said that a substitute would have no interest in the ground. All he would bother about would be his money on Saturday night.
Outcome of appeal
Exemption - temporary

Journal Date
23 Dec 1916
