Military Tribunals – Hamilton John SIDERFINE

Hamilton John Siderfine (29), Wickhamford, who has 7½ acres of land, was also a conscientious objector on the grounds that all wars were contrary to the teaching of jesus Christ. In reply to questions he said he objected to killling and taking human life and also to home service. The Military Representative: “What is your religious denomination?” “A sect called Plymouth Brethren.” “Have you been a Plymouth Brethren all your time?” “Yes.” “Is that part of their doctrine?” “Yes; of course they vary a bit.” “You will admit that the fact of your sitting quietly at home is entirely due to the British Navy and Army?” “I won’t necessarily admit that.” “Have you read anything about the war?” “No; I haven’t much.” “Then you wouldn’t know. My suggestion is that there are people willing enough for people to fight for them while they sit quietly at home. I do not say so in this case. We all know that if it were not for the British Army and Navy you would not be enjoying yourselves at home. Keeping up the Army and Navy is simply a large form of insurance?” Applicant: “I object to all sorts of military service. I think I am here for the glory of God."
