During the First World War, 10 million people, servicemen or civilians, were captured and sent to detention camps.
From reports in the Parish Magazine, we know of several men from Badsey, Aldington and Wickhamford who were taken prisoner. In addition, we have been able to find out further information from the website of the International Committee of the Red Cross Committee (ICRC). The belligerent countries involved provided lists of prisoners to ICRC, which created an index card for each prisoner and detainee. This has now been digitised and may be viewed on the ICRC Archives website. The information which was typically available was: surname, forename, rank, regiment, where taken prisoner, previous whereabouts, address of next of kin. Unfortunately, the recording of names at the time does not appear to have been very accurate, and it has not been possible as yet to find some of the men on the ICRC website.
This following list shows all the Badsey, Aldington and Wickhamford residents who were known to have been prisoners of war.
