WOMEN AND THE LAND
The question of finding women labour for the land was discussed at a meeting of the Evesham District War Agricultural Committee held on Monday last, and it was decided to prepare a register of women in the district who are willing to work on the land, and of farmers who are willing to employ them. As most of the capable women who want to work are already employed, we do not think that the preparation of the register will have any marvellous results. Of course we may be wrong in this, and anyhow registering the women will not do any harm. Much more practical to our mind was the point brought forward by Mr A R Williams, of Broadway. He drew attention to the great help that it would be to farmers, (and it will apply equally to market gardeners) if they could get a lad or two from school just when they want them. As things are at present, application for boys has to be made to the District Education Committee, and this may entail so much delay that the opportunity of utilising the boy’s labour to the best advantage may pass away altogether before permission to use the boy is granted.
