Family History Lives on in town Museum

Old family links with Badsey, and more particularly with the former Sladden & Collier brewery in Brick Kiln Street, Evesham, were revived on Tuesday.  Katherine Sladden, now living in Benfleet, Essex, was in town to present to the Almonry Museum the little silver trowel used when the old family brewery was extended in 1884, and given to her father, John Dilnot Sladden, when he was only five.  He was the eldest of Sir Julius Sladden’s eight children and the only one not to be born at the traditional family home, Seward House, at Badsey.  The house is now an old people’s home, but Sladden links with the village live on.  Mrs Nancy Sladden, whose grandfather was Sir Julius’s eldest brother, lives in a converted barn behind Seward House.

Miss Sladden, who also gave to the museum her father’s old school reports, is pictured with her cousin (left) and museum custodian, Arthur Fryer.

For the record, the huge Brick Kiln Street building ceased to be a brewery years ago.  It later became a night club and is now destined to be turned into old people’s homes.
