The Little Guides were originally planned at the beginning of the 20th century and had the same format for each county. In 1940, for reasons of national security, a ban was placed on the publication of new and revised editions of English guide-books; when the ban was lifted in 1945, the Little Guides were practically unobtainable. The three original planners were dead, and the series, although still held in high esteem, needed to be thoroughly overhauled. Under the general editorship of Edmund Vale, the series was reissued bit by bit.
