MICKLETON - Wickhamford top ten 1500s

The name Mickleton first appears in Wickhamford parish records in 1553; the last incidence is in 1641. However, there is a much earlier reference to the name.  In the Lay Subsidy Roll of 1280, a Roberto de Mikelton lived at Wike Waneford (Wickhamford).  Half a century later, in the Lay Subsidy Roll of 1332-1333, there was also a Roberto de Mekelton.

Family 1

The first mention of the name Mickleton in Wickhamford parish registers is when John Mickleton, son of Thomas Mickleton died.  It is likely that Thomas died in 1572, although there is also a Thomas who died in 1597.  Thomas may have been married to Agnes who died in 1571.

Family 2

Edward Mickleton had four children, all baptised at Wickhamford:  Elizabeth (1563), Alice (1565), Tibotta (1567) and Edward (1569).  Edward may have been married to Marjery who was buried at Wickhamford on 3rd February 1572; Edward was buried nine days later on 12th February.

  • Edward Mickleton (1569) married Maria (or Mary as her name sometimes appeared) Booker at Wickhamford in 1590.  They had four sons and three daughters:  Agnes (1593-1593), Thomas (1594-1594), Edmund (1597), Mary (1600), William (1603-1635), Thomas (1607-1614) and Frances (1612-1671).  Maria may possibly have been buried at Wickhamford in 1636 (the register is difficult to read).  It is not known where or when Edward died. His name last appears in the Wickhamford manorial court records in 1639, so it may have been soon after that.
    • Edmund Mickleton (1597) was apprenticed to Henry Mustoe of the Fishmonger Company in London in 1616.
    • William Mickleton (1603-1635) is mentioned in the manorial court records for 1631 being granted a messuage and some land which once belonged to Thomas Mickleton but now Edward Mickleton (his father).  In 1632 there was reference to exchanges of land between Mr Acton and Edward and William Mickleton.  It is thought that he had a daughter, Elizabeth, baptised at Wickhamford in November 1635; William died a month later.  He may have been married to Frances who was mentioned in the Wickhamford manorial court records of 1639.
    • Frances Mickleton (1612-1671) married Richard Oldakers in 1641 and remained in Wickhamford until her death.  This was the last mention of the name Mickleton in the parish records.
    • Edward and Mary may also have had a son called Francis.  Francis Mickleton is mentioned in the Wickhamford manorial court records of 1639 when he was granted property then in the occupation of Edward Mickleton.  Two years later, Francis surrendered this property.

The name Mickleton had died out in Wickhamford by the 1640s.  There are no incidences of the name Mickleton in the neighbouring parish of Badsey.
