Boys rescue dying fish

Aldington Mill PondSeveral Vale of Evesham youngsters have given up their spare time to play Good Samaritans to some 50 dying fish.  The boys noticed the fish fighting for their lives when they visited the Mill Pond at Aldington, which had virtually dried up.

A rescue operation was launched immediately and after two days’ hard work, most of the fish had been taken out of the disappearing pond and transferred to a local reservoir.

By last Friday morning the rescue was complete, the fish were swimming happily in the reservoir and the youngsters were feeling pleased with their good deed.

Among the fish given a new lease of life were some ornamental carp, perch, two 2½ lb chub and a crucian carp.

The youngsters who carried out the rescue operation were brothers Ian and Kevin Briffett, aged 16 and 14 respectively, who live at 1 Ivy Cottage, Aldington, Francis Andrew and Nigel Welch.

The brothers’ mother, Mrs Gill Briffett, said:  “They like fishing and they happened to go to the pond and saw the water going down and the fish struggling.  They thought the best way to save them was to put them somewhere where there was plenty of water.  It’s nice to see youngsters doing something good instead of getting up to mischief.”
