BADSEY PIG CLUB – SPKC Regional Officer’s Helpful Talk
Badsey Pig Club held a successful dinner on Thursday last week at the Wheatsheaf Assembly Room. The meal was prepared by Miss C Wixey, hostess of the inn, and helpers.
Mr F S Titterton, Regional Officer of the Small Pig Keepers’ Council of Worcestershire and Staffordshire, in a talk to the gathering, said that their progress – they started with seven members three years ago and now had a membership of 180 members – was very good. “It’s the best club I have in the whole of my area,” he remarked, adding that no doubt it was to Mr V Wasley’s efficiency as Hon Secretary. He personally wished to thank Mr Wasley from the Small Pig Keepers’ Council on the way he ran the club. They all did a grand job during the war and since, and the success of a club depended on the secretary and chairman (Mr E Salter) with the members meeting once a month.
PIG BREEDING
A member asked what was the position if he wanted to start pig breeding, and if the Ministry would grant him a farrowing allowance. Mr Titterton replied that the Ministry were not encouraging new breeders, ie those who did not breed pigs in 1940.
A young member exclaimed rather heatedly, “Then it is time something was done about it.” He said eight years was a big cut out of a member’s life. The younger generation wanted to go ahead, and the Ministryshould realise the fact.
Mr Titterton, in reply, said it was not the fault of the Small Pig Keepers’ Council for they kept pushing the Ministry for more meal, “but there are 700 tons of meal escaping on to the black market and until that is stopped, the Ministry won’t budge.” He promised to give the club all the help he could. Mr Titterton was thanked for his enlightening remarks.
A musical programme followed, Mr J Sutton played his accordion and Mr Titterton revealed himself to be a very competent pianist, and received considerable applause. Members who contributed songs included Mr H Sadler and Mr E Shelley and Mr Pat Wheatley played for community singing.
In concluding the evening, Mr Wasley and Mr Salter thanked Miss Wixey and the helpers.
