Badsey & Aldington Trail - Location 6

Brewers Lane

Brewers Lane is named after James Brewer who had a bakery and shop in the lane. In 1901 he lived at No. 1 Chapel Street, which backed on to the bakery.  Interestingly, prior to the 1901 Census, the street was referred to as the Green, and in the 1912 Valuation Survey it was known as Lanket Lane. The bakery was established in 1897 and was still in operation in the 1950s. It is now a house called The Old Bakehouse, on the left in the picture below from 1968. Next door was a shop, originally owned by Mr Brewer, and latterly owned by the Wheatley family.
