Badsey & Aldington Trail - Location 43

Mill Lane

An orchard occupied the area of land on Mill Lane, Badsey, where the present-day houses called Sunlea, Brookside House and Nevrin are situated. It was sold by Edward Wilson on 10 March 1774 for £63. Elizabeth Badsey and John Cotton, referred to in the deed, lived at the present-day Vicarage Cottage and Glebe Cottage.

Some of the oldest buildings in the village are here. These include Vicarage Cottage and Glebe Cottage, which were owned and rented out by the church at the time of the 1913 land valuation survey, plus Orchard Cottage and Barn Cottage.

The row of three cottages at the end of High Street, Badsey (Nos 46-50 High Street), together with Field Cottage in Mill Lane, were at one time known as numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4 Mill Cottages, even though they were never part of the mill land; their address in old census returns often appears as Mill Lane. The old corn mill cottages were demolished in the 1970s.
