ENTERTAINMENT FOR TROOPS
Members of the local branch of the Women’s Institute have during recent weeks, arranged events to raise funds to entertain the troops billeted in the village. In these functions their efforts were successful, and on Wednesday evening a meal and entertainment was given to the troops in the old school. About seventy enjoyed an excellent meal prepared and served by members of the Institute. The Vicar (Canon W C Allsebrook, RD), said he was pleased that the branch had arranged such a function, and one of the officers of the unit replied that it was very much appreciated by the troops, as also were the efforts of the Badsey Voluntary Canteen Committee, who had done a great deal to make the troops comfortable. Members of the local branch of the Women’s Institute then joined the gathering, and all listened to an excellent entertainment given by the Vale Singers. Ted Hall and Percy Sanger highly amused the audience with their comedy, and John Sutherland’s piano accordion solos were greatly applauded, as also was the singing of George Harrison and Victor Newbury. The items were accompanied by Billy Morton. This was followed by singing and dancing to music by the Institute Jazz Band, which consisted of Mrs W H Sadler, Miss Lucy Sadler, Mrs R Rouse, Mrs F Salter and Miss K Brailsford. Songs were rendered by Mrs R Rouse and Miss L Sadler.
