1789 - Settlement Certificate for William and Elizabeth Higgins

Description

A settlement certificate for William and Elizabeth Higgins from the Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor for Badsey confirming their legal settlement in Badsey.  Words on front:

Certificate from the Parish of Badsey to Cutsden in the Parish of Bredon, both in the County of Worcester

Followed by the words inside:

We the present Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Badsey in the said County of Worcester whose names are here unto subscribed, do hereby own and acknowledge William Higgins, by trade a Weaver, and Elizabeth, his present wife (they having no child at present) to be our inhabitants legally settled in the said Parish of Badsey in the County aforesaid.  And if at any time henceforth, he the said William Higgins and Elizabeth his said wife and also his child or children which may hereafter be lawfully born in your said Parish (provided that such child or children shall not by service, marriage or by some other lawful means obtain a legal settlement in the said Parish of Bredon in the County aforesaid) or any or either of them shall become chargeable to, or be forced to ask Relief of your Parish of Cutsden in the Parish of Bredon, we do hereby promise and oblige ourselves and our successors to take them back into our said Parish of Badsey and provide for them there according to law.

In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals the 27th day of November in the year of our Lord 1789.  Sealed and delivered in the presence of:

Thomas Byrd, John Simpson (Churchwardens)

John Simpson, Joseph Byrd, Thomas Smith, William Smith (Overseers of the Poor)

On the reverse are the words:

To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of Cutsden in the Parish of Bredon and County of Worcester, or to any or either of them,

We whose names are hereunto subscribed, two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid, do allow of the within written Certificates and we do also certify that Thomas Smith, one of the witnesses who attested the execution of the said Certificate, hath this day made oath before us the said Justices, that he did see the Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor severally sign and seal the same and that the names of the said Thomas Smith and of Joseph Bird whose names are subscribed as witnesses to the execution of the said Certificate are respectively of their own proper handwriting.
