Letters from George Mourilyan Sladden (1886-1948), sixth child of Julius and Eugénie Sladden

George Mourilyan Sladden (1886-1948) was the sixth child of Julius and Eugénie Sladden.  He was born on 30^th January 1886 at Seward House, Badsey.  The Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service at The Hive in Worcester contains 186 of his letters written between 1891 and 1948.

There are 45 letters from the pre World War I period; these have not been transcribed but may be viewed at Worcester.  These letters were mainly written from Bancroft’s School, Essex, where he was a pupil, and then from his accommodation in London once he had joined the Civil Service.  From 1910, the letters were written from 12 Charleville Circus, Sydenham, where he lived with his siblings Jack, Kathleen and Cyril.

George, who was in the Territorials, spent most of the war in France with the Civil Service Rifles after a period of training in Hertfordshire.  There are 126 letters from the WW1 period, all of which have been transcribed.  They are mainly written from France, though a few were written in the UK whilst on home leave.

There are also 15 letters written after the First World War from his home in Durham, mainly to his sister, Juliet; these have not been transcribed but may be viewed at Worcester.
