Maud SIMPSON (née TURNEY) (1885-1975)
Maud Simpson, née Turney (1885-1975), was the wife of George Thornton Simpson who was the step-son of Eugénie Sladden’s niece, Mary Simpson (née Robinson).
Maud was born on 15th June 1885 in Nottingham, the youngest of seven children of Sir John Turney, and his wife, Juliette. Sir John was an influential Nottingham businessman, founder of a leather company based on the banks of the River Trent where Turneys Quay now stands. His home was a magnificent Georgian mansion called Gedling House.
Maud married George Thornton Simpson, a solicitor based in Nottingham, on 12th June 1913 at All Hallows, Gedling. They had two children: Christine Thornton (1914-1989) and Miles Turney Thornton (1916-2001).
Maud is referred to in a letter of 8th June 1914 written by Mary Anna (Polly) Robinson on the occasion of having given birth to her first child. Reference is also made to her and her husband and daughter on the occasion of their visit to Devon in August 1915.
Maud died on 4th May 1975 at Wards Cottage, 72 Main Street, Papplewick, Nottinghamshire, aged 89.
