Anne Evelyn PHILLIPS (née MONGER) (1858-1924)
Anne Evelyn Phillips, née Monger (1858-1924), known as Annie, was the mother of Hubert Phillips who was a schoolfriend of Arthur Sladden. When the Sladden family holidayed in the Newport area in August 1914, she sent over some apples and some members of the family went to call upon her to thank here.
Annie Monger was born in Swansea, Glamorganshire, in 1858, the third of nine children of William Monger and his wife, Jane (née Bevan). She grew up at Aberdyberthy House, Swansea. Her father was described as an agent in 1871 and as Master of Copper Rolling Mills in 1881.
On 14th February 1844 at the Church of St John the Baptist, Hafod, Swansea, Annie married David Griffith Phillips, a church minister. They had four children: Evan William Monger Hubert (1884-1948), Margaret (1886-1892), Jane Maude (1893-1977) and Robert Lionel (1898-1956). They lived in Swansea in their early married life, then moved to St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire, then in 1897 to Cilrheydn, Carmarthenshire, when her husband became Rector of Cilrheydn In 1904 they moved to Newport when David became Rector of Newport.
Annie died at Newport Rectory on 9th March 1924.
