Margarett WALTON (née SMITH) (1850-1932)
Margarett Walton, née Smith (1850-1932) was the mother-in-law of Eugénie Sladden’s niece, Fanny Walton.
Margarett was born at Brighton in 1850, the only child of Charles Smith, a house proprietor, and his wife, Matilda. She was baptized at the Chapel Royal, Brighton, on 7th June 1850. At the time of the 1861 census, Margarett was a pupil at a boarding school in Brighton.
On 25th May 1870, Margarett married Edwin Henry Walton at St John the Evangelist, Notting Hill. Edwin’s profession was given as “Holder of houses” or “Gentleman”. They moved to Pembridge Lodge, 3 Paragon, Richmond, where five sons and five daughters were born: Charles Henry (1871-1945), Frederick Edward (1872), Ethel Jessy (1873), Margarett Eleanor (1874), Madeline Matilda (1876), Clarence Archer (1877), Edwin Reginald (1878), Hubert Vincent (1881), Mary Vere (1883) and Elsie Dora (1885). By 1891 the Waltons had moved to Dunstable House, Sheen Road, Richmond (this house today is a Grade II listed building which has been divided into apartments).
Margarett’s husband, Edwin, died on 5th March 1899. Margarett was still at Dunstable House in 1901 but had moved to Marlow, Buckinghamshire, by 1908, living firstly at Quarry Wood, then Sunny Bank, then Dunstable House.
Mary Anna Robinson, whose daughter, Fanny, had married Margarett’s son, Charles, mentions Margarett in two of her letters, indicating that Charlie and Fanny and children were going to stay with Mrs Walton.
Margarett died on 27th March 1932 at Dunstable House, Marlow.
