Mary Octavia HILL (née BROWN CONSTABLE) (1865-1944)
Mary Octavia Hill, née Brown Constable (1865-1944), known as Mamie, was the aunt of Mela Brown Constable (the fiancée of Cyril Sladden).
Mamie Brown Constable was born on 17th October 1865 at 1 Lansdown Place, Cheltenham, the eighth of 12 children of Charles Brown Constable by his second wife, Mary Christina (née Mackenzie). Her father was a retired Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army.
On 11th July 1893, in Ootacamund, Madras, India, Mamie married Francis John Hill. They had two daughters: Frances Irene (1894-1973) and Geraldine Mary (1902-1972), both born in India.
Francis died on 30th November 1910 and Mamie returned to England a year or two later. By 1915, Mamie was living in a little house at Mayfield. Her niece, Mela, who had not seen her for about 16 years when they lived in India, described her thus: She is very jolly and kind-hearted and has such beautifully brown hair, so much of it that she can only pile it up on the top of her head.” By 1917 Mamie was living at Gerrards Cross.
Mamie lived in Thrapston, Northamptonshire, at the time of the 1939 Register; she was described as an invalid. She died on 19th September 1944 at Bulwick, Kettering, Northamptonshire.
