Sarah WOOD (1802-1881)
Sarah Wood (1802-1881) was the aunt of Eugénie Sladden (née Mourilyan).
Sarah Wood was born at Dover, Kent, in 1802, the fifth of 11 children of James Wood, a merchant, and his wife, Susanna (née Fowle).
Sarah did not marry. In 1850, Sarah and her younger sister, Elizabeth Ann Wood, took a tour of Germany with a Miss Castle. Elizabeth kept a journal of their tour which is now held by the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service (Reference 705:1037/9520/17/vi/39). The journal is illustrated with sketches of the sights they saw.
In 1851 Sarah was living with Elizabeth in Eastry. In about 1860, presumably inspired by their visit to Germany in 1850, Sarah and Elizabeth went to live in Heidelberg in the Grand Duchy of Baden. Elizabeth died in 1871 in Heidelberg; it is likely that Sarah returned to England then.
In the last years of her life, Sarah lived with her youngest brother, the Reverend Thomas Wood, and his wife, at the Vicarage in Northbourne. She died at Northbourne on 29th July 1881.
