Biographical Details

Sophia Mildred Du Pre (1855-1939) was responsible for recommending the High School in Clewer, Berkshire, where May, Kathleen and Ethel Sladden were pupils.

Sophia Mildred Du Pre was born at Wereham, Norfolk, in 1855, the fourth of five children of the Reverend Michael Thomas Du Pre, Perpetual Curate of Ryston cum Roxham, Norfolk, and his wife, Sophia (née Gardiner).

By 1860 when her youngest sibling, Arthur, was born, the family had moved to Guiting Power, Gloucestershire, where Reverend Du Pre was now the Vicar.  Sophia’s mother, Sophia, died in December 1861 when Sophia was aged six.  Her father married again in 1865 to Anne Watkins.

Like her older sister, Evelyn, on leaving school, Sophia went into teaching.  By 1891, Sophia was living at 24 Lansdowne, Cheltenham, and was a teacher at the Ladies’ College.  She remained at the Ladies’ College for the rest of her teaching career.  By 1911, her younger sister, Evelyn, had joined her at the Ladies’ College where Evelyn was now the Headmistress.  The two sisters lived at Benella, Painswick Road.

Sophia died at Barnwood House Hospital, Barnwood, Gloucestershire, on 21st December 1939.
